We’re looking for a world-class user experience designer to join Clearleft’s team of internationally-renowned experts. Our ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of and passion for usability, research, information architecture, and complex interaction design.
You’ll be working in a very flexible environment so a broad toolkit of skills is essential. You’ll get to pick the best approach for each project. We don’t mind if you sketch your solution on paper, wireframe in OmniGraffle or hand-code an HTML prototype. However, we prefer the fast, iterative approach and “just enough” fidelity; so you won’t be forced to create large spec documents at Clearleft.
We believe that the best UX people are also design facilitators, so a large part of your job will be communication. You’ll be good with people and able to justify your design decisions in a clear and concise manner. You’ll be able to run a variety of stakeholder workshops to help extract requirements, set vision, iterate through ideas and present solutions. You’ll be a strong writer and ideally have extensive graphic facilitation skills. You’ll be able to communicate your ideas in whatever way works best. This could be anything from a simple presentation or screencast through to a detailed concept map or day-in-the-life cartoon.
Although we’re not looking for a research specialist, we expect all our UX designers to have a broad knowledge of research techniques, user surveys, stakeholder interviews and usability testing. Knowledge of remote testing, ethnography and analytics would be a definite plus. Other nice-to-haves include a background in psychology, experience of agile UX and an interest in content strategy.
Most of all we’re looking for people who are passionate about the industry and have a desire to push the UX field forward. So we’re after people who want to keep up with—and create—the latest trends and techniques through books, blogs and conferences. If you keep your own blog or have the desire to speak at international events, even better.
In return for your experience and enthusiasm we’ll provide you with a supportive and highly creative environment, and the chance to work with some of the best-known and most talented designers, developers and UX people in the industry. You’ll work on high profile projects for the likes of Channel 4, Mozilla and NBC Universal to name just a few.
As a small company we believe that your happiness matters, so we’ve put together a great package. We’ll give you flexible working hours and the ability to work from home when you want. We’ll also give you a training budget of £1,000—so if you’ve always wanted to go to the IA Summit or IxDA Interaction, now you can. We run team training days (like sketching and letterpress printing) and company days out (like photography classes and trips to the Design Museum). All this along with our monthly movie nights, beach BBQs and occasional (optional) karaoke sessions, makes working at Clearleft fun.
If you think you have what it takes to join our team, drop us your CV, a link to your portfolio and a covering letter explaining why you’d be perfect for this job. We look forward to hearing from you.
The deadline for applications is 12th October 2010.
